In Amapá, communities in the west of the state suffered a process of environmental racism
by the contamination of the river that supplies them. In this text we deal with the reality of the community
do Xivete, a riverside community located in the municipality of Pedra Branca do Amapari, which
had its river completely polluted with cyanide residues that imposed the community on
water suffering. Pollution was caused by corporate mining, gold mining
through the cyanidation process, which has been taking place in the municipality since 2005.
investigates the state of hydric suffering imposed on the Xivete community through processes
of ecocide, the environmental impacts caused and community resistance to this
environmental injustice. The theoretical framework is based on concepts for understanding the
meaning of water stress and ecocide processes for communities
traditional Amazon. The methodology consisted of document analysis, contemplating the
letter filed by the community with the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), the
report issued by the Secretariat for the Environment of the State of Amapá (SEMA) and
complaints on social networks. The analyzed documents confirmed the contamination by
cyanide from the Xivete River which resulted in a state of water suffering for the community. A
contamination of the Xivete Community river is an ecocide phenomenon, imposing
water suffering to the community, violating a basic human right, jeopardizing the balance
environment necessary for life. Moreover, it is a phenomenon that is within the field of genocide,
by the category of slow death, since this contamination brings harmful effects
irreversible effects on the health of those on leave. |
