Along all developmental psychology research field, we highlight the institutional care environment, enabling to investigate its influence on the development of children away from their families, and mainly provide data that enable interventions for child development. For this, it is necessary to know the environment, practices and views on the care of professionals who provide care to children in institutional care, because according to the Niche model, these elements contribute to shaping the development of children. This study aimed to investigate the development environment of institutional shelters for children from zero to six years, based on the three subsystems of the niche, comparing two contexts, metropolitan region of Belém (RMB) and the countryside of state (IE) from the look of educators institutional shelters. The data was collected by semi structured interviews with educators from 11 shelters in the state of Pará. 110 educators, 107 females and three male, between 19-63 years participated. The group of the Metropolitan Region of Belém was composed by 77 participants and the countryside by 33. The results indicate that, both in the metropolitan and countryside area, the Institutions had large and wooded areas, However, in the metropolitan region had Institutions which met large groups of children, separating them in the dorms by gender and/or age group. Regarding the care practices, educators in the metropolitan region of Belém value more free plays activities, while the educator from the rural zones prefers oriented plays. About the educators’ psychology, the results show that educators in the metropolitan region of Belém better realize the influence of his work in the development of autonomy, curiosity and the ability to relate to others. The study indicated that although there are differences between concepts and care practices, it predominates the homogeneity of both in the metropolitan area of Belém and Countryside State. It should be noted that the analysis presented is far from clarifying the quality of care and institutional routines in the metropolitan area of Belém and the countryside, but has contributions to the area since the instrument was useful to survey the profile, conceptions and practices educators of care in institutional shelters. CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico O modelo do Nicho Desenvolvimental, contribui ao propor o estudo da criança e a cultura como única análise, por meio de três componentes mutuamente relacionados, (a) ambiente físico e social, (b) práticas de cuidado e (c) psicologia dos cuidadores. Dentre os campos de estudo da psicologia do desenvolvimento, destacamos aqui o ambiente de acolhimento institucional, por possibilitar investigações sobre aspectos que atuam sobre o desenvolvimento de crianças afastadas do convívio familiar e, principalmente, proporcionar dados que viabilizem intervenções para um desenvolvimento infantil. Para isto, faz-se necessário conhecer este ambiente, as práticas e concepções sobre o cuidado dos profissionais que prestam cuidado as crianças, pois segundo o modelo do Ninho, estes elementos contribuem para moldar o desenvolvimento das crianças. Neste sentido, este estudo objetivou investigar o ambiente de desenvolvimento de abrigos institucionais, para crianças de zero a seis anos, com base nos três subsistemas do Nicho, comparando dois contextos, Região Metropolitana de Belém (RMB) e Interior do Estado (IE), a partir do olhar de educadores dos abrigos institucionais. Os dados foram coletados por entrevista semiestruturada com educadores de 11 abrigos institucionais do estado do Pará. Participaram 110 educadores, sendo 107 do sexo feminino e três do masculino, entre 19 a 63 anos. O grupo da Região Metropolitana de Belém foi composto por 77 participantes e do Interior do Estado por 33. Os resultados indicam que, tanto na região metropolitana, quanto no interior, as instituições possuíam espaços amplos e arborizados, contudo, na região metropolitana, haviam instituições que atendiam grandes grupos de crianças, separando-as nos dormitórios por sexo e/ou faixa etária; por sua vez, no interior do estado, observou-se um ambiente institucional similar ao de uma residência e com estrutura para atender diferentes faixas etárias no mesmo dormitório. No que tange as práticas de cuidado, os educadores da Região Metropolitana de Belém valorizaram mais as brincadeiras não dirigidas, enquanto que educadores do interior as brincadeiras dirigidas. Com relação a psicologia dos educadores, os resultados apontam que educadores da Região Metropolitana de Belém melhor percebem a influência do seu trabalho no desenvolvimento da autonomia, curiosidade e na capacidade de se relacionar com os outros. O estudo indicou que apesar de existirem diferenças entre concepções e práticas de cuidado, prevalece uma homogeneidade das mesmas na Região Metropolitana de Belém e Interior do Estado.
