The main objective was to examine how the artisanal fishing of Macrobrachium amazonicum is linked to the production of local natural resources and which strategies the local population can employ in the Abaetetuba Islands to reduce predatory prawn fishing in the region. Can the extraction of local products, together with sustainable prawn fishing, such as catch experiments using modified fishing techniques (matapi), knowledge of local rules and regulations and appropriate management of natural resources (fishing and extraction) reduce the size of the catch? Strategies such as this experiment show that there was an increase in the total weight of the catch, resulting in higher incomes. Furthermore, this production, combined with other extraction products and additional measures such as environmental education and fishing outreach courses, helps to reduce predatory fishing. Of the total production recorded in the island (the seasonal extraction of açai and mirity palm, as well as fish and prawn fishing), over 80% was for sale and complements the income of fishermen. Qualitative and quantitative studies were conducted, using open and closed questionnaires, together with a piece of participatory research and a case study. They were relevant for the two communities and for the type of matapi, given that they can increase the size of the catch. Catch data evidenced the existence of predatory fishing. Other natural resources (açai, fish and mirity) and governmental programs are essential and complementary to fishermen's incomes. In the Islands, prawn fishing has great potential for supplying the region's local fish trade. It also involves a type of social organization that promotes the community management of wetlands. A tese aborda estratégias de manejo comunitário para pesca artesanal de camarão canela (Macrobrachium amazonicum) e suas relações com a economia local na várzea amazônica, nas comunidades de Santa Maria e São Miguel, na Ilha Sirituba, município de Abaetetuba, Pará, Brasil. O objetivo foi analisar como a pesca artesanal de camarão canela (Macrobrachium amazonicum) está relacionada com a produção dos recursos naturais locais e quais estratégias podem ser desenvolvidas pela população na região das Ilhas de Abaetetuba - PA para diminuir a pesca predatória de camarão. Em razão disso, a hipótese é de que a produção local dos recursos extrativistas, associada à estratégia sustentável na pesca de camarão – como a captura com experimentos de arte de pesca modificados (matapi) –, ao conhecimento de regras locais, e a orientações de manejo adequado do recurso natural (pesca e extrativismo), pode diminuir a quantidade capturada. As estratégias como o experimento revelaram que houve aumento na quantidade do peso total capturado, podendo levar a uma renda superior. Além disso, a produção combinada com outros produtos do extrativismo auxilia na redução da pesca predatória, assim como outras ações, tais como educação ambiental e extensão pesqueira. Da produção (extrativismo sazonal do açaí e miriti, e produção de pescados e camarão) registrada nas ilhas, mais de 80% é para venda, auxiliando na renda do pescador. Foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa e quantitativa, com questionários de perguntas abertas e fechadas, além da pesquisa participante e estudo de caso. O experimento foi significativo para as duas comunidades, sendo constatado que o tipo de matapi pode auxiliar no aumento da quantidade capturada do camarão. Os dados de captura alertam para a pesca predatória. Os demais recursos naturais (açaí, pescados e miriti) e programas de governo são essenciais e complementares para a renda do pescador.
