The writer most often forgotten by literary stories and criticism in general was an important man of letters in the 19th century. He produced a considerable number of texts of the most diverse genres and among all this diversity of writings published mainly in the Diário do Rio de Janeiro there is the work A família da Agulha (1870). In view of the rescue of this important literary production of the 19th century, in this research we intend to carry out a critical analysis of this novel, highlighting the issues present in the work and the mechanisms of construction of the narrative itself. Moreover we intend to highlight aspects related to the author's life, his relations with the publishing market of the time, the engagiment with the reading public as well as the critical receptions about his publications in general and more specifically the novel in question. Such appreciation was consolidated mainly from the analysis of some primary sources due to the scarcity of research and studies that target both the writer and his work. Among these sources, the newspaper Diário do Rio de Janeiro from 1869 to 1872 is cited as an example, a period in which Guimarães Júnior served as the writer of this periodical. Luís Guimarães Júnior nasceu em 17 de fevereiro de 1845, no Rio de Janeiro, e faleceu em 20 de maio de 1898 em Lisboa. O escritor, na maioria das vezes esquecido pela maior parte das histórias literárias e pela crítica em geral, foi um importante homem de letras no século XIX. Guimarães Júnior produziu um número considerável de textos dos mais diversos gêneros, e, entre toda essa diversidade de escritos, publicados sobretudo no espaço do folhetim no Diário do Rio de Janeiro, temos a obra A Família Agulha (1870). Tendo em vista o resgate dessa importante produção literária do século XIX, objetivamos, nesta pesquisa, realizar uma análise crítica do romance em escopo, destacando as questões presentes na obra e os mecanismos de construção da própria narrativa. Além disso, pretendemos destacar também aspectos referentes à vida do autor, suas relações com o mercado editorial da época, o entrelace com o público leitor, assim como a recepção crítica acerca de suas publicações de um modo geral e, mais especificamente, do romance em questão. Tal apreciação consolidou-se principalmente a partir da análise de algumas fontes primárias devido à escassez de estudos que se voltem tanto ao escritor quanto a sua obra. Entre tais fontes, citamos, como exemplo, o jornal Diário do Rio de Janeiro de 1869 a 1872, período em que Guimarães Júnior atuou como folhetinista desse periódico.
