The reference years (2020 and 2021) are marked by a health crisis experienced worldwide, of undulating administration, with regard to Nation-States and, also, internally. In Brazil, physical distancing measures and hygiene guidelines have become a central issue and, in this context, digital communication technologies have taken on a previously unseen centrality. When considering groups of people who may have shown more evident distancing from connected screens, the research focuses on the experience of the elderly, as a starting point. This qualitative research departs from a communicational context to encompass the phenomenon of expanded social doing. Some of the theoretical fronts activated during the argument are in the field of aging (chronological and social), identities (generations), material culture, and power relations, starting from a set of meanings produced by the interlocutors of the research. As collection methods, the digital form and focus groups were used. With that, the Thematic Analysis (TA) showed a path of interest, with the necessary flexibility, in the search for speech patterns, paths of meanings, and senses produced by the investigated. To help with the task, the Iramuteq software was used on the fronts of statistical analyses, similarity, descending hierarchical classification, and presentation of word clouds. By opening up the range of findings, the initial concern about the heterogeneity of the experiences of older people is reinforced. Life, health, economic, and family conditions, for instance, will directly influence the so-called independence (more connected to physical issues) and the desired autonomy (decision-making; self-government). The main screen used was the cell phone to talk to family and friends. Among those who maintained active professional relationships during the verified period, it was possible to perceive a smaller field of friction. In general, the meanings that emerged from these relationships are paradoxical – they contain, roughly speaking, positive and negative points – and translated into technologies seen as access, a door to new learning and possibilities, at the same time as a set of spaces of danger, insecurity, and mystery, especially among those who used the term fear to refer to digital experiences. FAPESPA - Fundação Amazônia de Amparo a Estudos e Pesquisas O presente estudo se interessa pelas relações de pessoas com 60 anos ou mais junto às tecnologias cotidianas, em especial, durante a pandemia de Covid-19. Os anos de referência (2020 e 2021) são marcados por uma crise de saúde vivida mundialmente, de administração ondulante, no que diz respeito aos Estados-Nação e, ainda, internamente. No Brasil, medidas de afastamento físico e orientações de higiene se tornaram assunto central e, nesse contexto, as tecnologias digitais de comunicação tomaram centralidade não antes vista. Ao considerar grupos de pessoas que eventualmente tenham apresentado afastamentos mais evidentes em relação às telas conectadas, independentemente da pandemia, o recorte da pesquisa parte da experiência da pessoa idosa. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, que parte de uma visada meta comunicacional na tentativa de abarcar o fenômeno do fazer social ampliado, tendo como eixo explicativo as relações comunicativas cotidianas. Algumas das frentes teóricas ativadas durante a argumentação vêm de Vera França e Paula Simões (2016), como também de Vera França em reflexão solo (2018), de Jesús Martín-Barbero (1997), de Adriana Braga e Édison Gastaldo (2009), junto às contribuições de Stig Hjarvard (2015), de Vilso Junior Santi (2018), de José Luiz Braga (2007), de Göran Bolin (2020), além de Daniel Miller (2007), Paula Sibilia (2014 e 2019), Michel Foucault (2009) e Giorgio Agamben (2009), com outros e outras que contribuíram com a discussão. Em resumo, são conceitos e constructos no campo do envelhecimento (cronológico e social), das identidades (gerações), da cultura material e das relações de poder, partindo de um conjunto de sentidos produzidos pelos interlocutores e interlocutoras da pesquisa. Como métodos de coleta, o formulário digital e os grupos de foco foram utilizados. Nesse sentido, a Análise Temática (AT) se mostrou um caminho de interesse, com a flexibilidade necessária, na busca por padrões nas falas, a caminhos de significações e sentidos produzidos pelos investigados. No auxílio da tarefa, o software Iramuteq foi utilizado nas frentes de análises estatística, de similitude, na classificação hierárquica descendente e apresentação de nuvens de palavras. Ao abrir o leque dos achados, se reforça a preocupação de partida sobre a heterogeneidade das experiências dos sujeitos e sujeitas com mais idade. Condições de vida, de saúde, econômicas e de relação familiar, por exemplo, vão influenciar diretamente na chamada independência (mais conectada às questões físicas) e na almejada autonomia (tomada de decisão; autogoverno). Para eles e elas, a principal tela utilizada foi o telefone celular e para falar com familiares e amigos. Entre aqueles e aquelas que mantiveram relações profissionais ativas, durante o período verificado, foi possível perceber um menor campo de atritos. De modo geral, os sentidos que emergiram dessas relações são paradoxais – contém frentes, grosso modo, positivas e negativas – e traduzidos nas tecnologias vistas como acesso, porta para novos aprendizados e possibilidades, ao mesmo tempo que um conjunto de espaços de perigo, insegurança e mistério, principalmente, entre aqueles que utilizaram o termo medo para se referir às experiências e relações digitais.
