This master’s dissertation intends to develop a comprehensive examination of the critic reception produced in Spanish language about Grande sertão: veredas (1956), written by Guimarães Rosa (1908-1967). Since its first edition on Spanish language, Grán sertón: veredas caused a certain impact on society because of the themes of the book, such as the supposed ambiguous relationship between Riobaldo and Diadorim, which remains unsolved until the end of the first reading, and the universal hinterland created by poetic language that exceeds geographical boundaries and represents existential conflicts. The critic reception by Spanish-speakers researchers began, ideed, in 1967 after the launching of Grán sertón: veredas, translated into Spanish by Ángel Crespo and published by Seix Barral. Thus, the aim of this work is to undertake a review of some interpretations about Grán sertón: veredas, which caused great repercussion among Spanish-speaking intellectuals that purposed to unveil the implied meanings on the Rosean literary work. In this perspective, there will be analyzed texts from 1960’s of Revista de Cultura Brasileña’s archives and the recent critic reception developed by Soledad Bianchi (2004), Antonio Maura (2007), Maria Rosa Álvarez Sellers (2007), and Pilar Gómez Bedate (2007), besides other Brazilian literary critics. It is a bibliographical research method based on Aesthetics of Reception theory, proposed by Hans Robert Jauss (1921-1997), which considers the reader as an important category in the construction of a new artistic object during the reading act. The master’s dissertation is arranged in three chapters: in the first one, there will be an explanation about the theoretical framework of the Aesthetics of Reception principles and brief comments about aspects involved in the act of translation discussed in Walter Benjamin’s essay The task of the translator and in Antoine Berman’s translation theory. In the next chapters, the literary criticism in Spanish language about Grande sertão: veredas will be analyzed highlighting the divergences between the original text in Portuguese and its translation into Spanish concerning to how the translator dealt with the elements of poetic language in the Spanish version, as well as the insertion of the Rosean fiction on social and historical context of Hispanic countries. |
