To understand these conditions, we take the period from 1870 to 1930 and analyze how arose the demand for engineers in the region and how engineers have been gaining ground in local society. Furthermore, we analyze how was the work of the engineers founders of the School in the institutions of government. Finally we analyze the process of formation of these engineers, and taking into account that most of them studied in Rio de Janeiro we present an analysis of the contents in the curricula of the Polytechnic School of Rio de Janeiro. According to the discourses of the time, we observed that the demand for engineers had their moment of greatest intensity during the Belle-Époque, due to the large volume of public works undertaken in this period, however, this demand has occurred in the later periods. These were conditions that made possible the founding of the School. Since then, engineer’s school founders worked in various projects in the region, especially those developed by the Division of Public Works in order to promote the modernization of the region. This action enabled the recognition of engineer’s social class and contributed to the emergence of the School of Engineering that culminated in the creation of the Engineering Club (1919), which played an important role in creating and maintaining school. Finally, by analyzing the formation, we conclude that this enabled the performance of engineers as school teachers and strongly influenced the initial curriculum of the institution, becoming one of the emergency conditions of the School. CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior A Escola de Engenharia do Pará foi fundada no ano de 1931, por iniciativa de engenheiros locais que atuavam na região desde o final da década de 1870, e o propósito deste trabalho é investigar as condições que possibilitaram o surgimento desta instituição de ensino no cenário educacional paraense. Para entendermos estas condições, tomamos o período compreendido entre 1870 a 1930 e analisamos como surgiu a demanda por engenheiros na região e como os engenheiros foram ganhando espaço na sociedade local. Além disso, analisamos como se deu a atuação profissional dos engenheiros fundadores da Escola nas instituições da administração pública. Por fim analisamos o processo de formação destes engenheiros e, levando em conta que a maioria deles estudaram no Rio de janeiro fizemos uma análise dos conteúdos presentes nos currículos da Escola Politécnica do Rio de Janeiro. De acordo com os discursos da época, pudemos observar que a demanda por engenheiros teve seu momento de maior intensidade durante a Belle Époque, devido ao grande volume de obras públicas empreendidas neste período. Contudo esta demanda ainda se verificou nos períodos posteriores, sendo uma das condições que possibilitaram a fundação da Escola. A partir de então, os engenheiros fundadores da escola atuaram em diversas obras da região, sobretudo aquelas desenvolvidas pela Repartição de Obras Públicas no intuito de promover a modernização da região. Essa atuação possibilitou o reconhecimento social da categoria e contribuiu para a emergência da Escola de Engenharia, pois culminou com a criação do Clube de Engenharia (1919) que teve um importante papel na criação e manutenção da escola.
