This study evaluated the prevalence and risk factors associated with HPV infection in population of women seen at Center of Medical Specialties from Imperatriz-MA, in the period May-June 2012. The study was conducted in 103 women enrolled in Cancer Prevention Program Cervix, residents in Imperatriz city who underwent sampling for cervical-vaginal Papanicolaou testing and determination of HPV DNA by PCR. The demographic and clinicalepidemiological data sheet were taken from each woman's gynecological records which occurred on day of harvest survey. The profile of women was predominantly age over 25 years old, married, african descent and education with over eight years. The prevalence of HPV infection was 10.68%. There was no association with any of variables multiple partners ((20%), condom use (23.5%), not holding an annual PAP (13.6%), cigarette smoking (22.2%). Prevalence of HPV infection in women attending in Department of Women's Health Care at Imperatriz-MA was relatively low compared to other cities. Though no variable demonstrate association with the risk of infection, early sexual initiation, multiple partners, STDs showed high prevalence. A infecção pelo papilomavírus humano (HPV) é uma doença sexualmente transmissível de grande magnitude às mulheres, principalmente de países subdesenvolvidos, contribuindo para o aumento dos indicadores de morbi- mortalidade por ser o principal fator associado ao câncer do colo uterino. Este estudo avaliou a prevalência e os fatores de riscos associados à infecção pelo HPV na população de mulheres atendidas no Centro de Especialidades Médicas de Imperatriz-Maranhão, no período de maio a junho de 2012. Participaram 103 mulheres matriculadas no Programa de Prevenção do Câncer do Colo Uterino, residentes em Imperatriz e que se submeteram a colheita de material cervico-vaginal para o teste Papanicolaou e determinação de DNA-HPV através da PCR. Os dados demográficos e clínico-epidemiológicos foram extraídos da ficha ginecológica de cada mulher cujos registros ocorreram no dia da colheita do exame. O perfil das mulheres era predominantemente com idade acima de 25 anos, casadas, afro-descendentes e com escolaridade superior a oito anos. A prevalência da infecção por HPV foi 10,68%. Não houve associação com nenhuma das variáveis: multiplicidade de parceiros ((20%), uso de preservativo (23,5%), não realização anual de PAP (13,6%), fumo de cigarros (22,2%). A prevalência da infecção por HPV em mulheres atendidas no Serviço de Atenção à Saúde da Mulher, em Imperatriz-MA foi relativamente baixa em relação a outras cidades brasileiras.
