For about two years at the Goeldi Museum, a group has been studying cultivation methods for "long pepper" (Piper hispidinervium), an aromatic plant species of the Piperaceae family, characterized for containing in its essential oil a high content of safrole (about 92%). Safrole is the main precursor of piperonyl butoxide, which is widely used in the manufacture of light and biodegradable insecticides. Hence, the need has arisen to know more about the vegetative propagation of this species. The present work measured the influence of leaf area on the rooting of cuttings from matrix plants of two different clones installed in the municipality of Igarapé-Açu/PA. Cuttings of a size of 7cm were used, placed to root in washed pebble substrates in the "NON-MIST PROPAGATORS" system, applying the following treatments: 0 leaf, 1/2 leaf, 1 leaf and 2 leaves. This study shows the differences in rooting speed, root volume and phenological changes according to the treatments
