The focus of this project is to identify and investigate the strategies used by migrant fishermen and their families in the face of the new urban situation, in which they will face participation in a productive process organized differently from the rural environment. The considerable contingent of migrant fishermen living in the urban center of Belém cannot be seen as the sole result of the attraction of an urban labor market, but rather demonstrates the progressive bankruptcy of the fishing activity in rural areas where this was the main productive activity. The methodology for this investigation was based on a survey of the socio-economic profile of the migrant fishermen living in Belém, from which it was possible to observe that their displacement is related, on the one hand, to the countless difficulties they face in the fishing activity, such as the physical effort, the theft of nets, competition from industrial fishing, and, on the other hand, to the perspective of a "better life". It is noted that the prospects of this mobility are not always achieved, which implies a gradual adjustment of behavior, work, and cultural elements. Few will be absorbed in the formal labor market, due to several factors, such as the level of education, and unskilled labor, leaving informal work as one of the survival strategies. They also work as carpenters, peddlers, stevedores, watchmen and janitors.
