The present work deals with the anatomy and identification of the wood species of the Amazonian flora used in the manufacture of Paraense handicrafts that use this raw material. The objective is to establish a correlation between the type of handicraft and the wood used to make it, in order to demonstrate whether the empirical use of wood corresponds to the ideal physical, mechanical and biological characteristics for its intended purpose. The project is being developed in the Wood Anatomy Laboratory of the Botany Department of the Emílio Goeldi Museum. The handicraft pieces come from fairs, handicraft stores and factories, markets and donations. After their acquisition, the pieces are catalogued according to their model and identified through macroscopic study of the wood, using a "thread counter" magnifying glass. The 72 pieces acquired and examined were made from 37 wood species, the most common being: Euxylophora paraensis (Rutaceae), with 13 pieces; Aspidosperma spp (Apocynaceae), with 09 pieces; Hymenaea courbaril L. (Leg. Caesalpinioideae), with 06 pieces; Peltogyne sp (Leg. Caesalpinioideae), with 05 pieces and Simaruba amara L. (Simarubaceae) with 05 pieces. In the preliminary results Euxylophora paraenesis and Aspidosperma spp, are the most used in the making of wood crafts in Pará.
