On the sandbanks of Algodoal and Maiandeua islands the Polygalaceae R.Br. family is represented by the genus Polygala L. through the species P. spectabilis Dc., P. apressa Benth. and P. variabilis H.B.K. This study used material collected on Maiandeua and Algodoal islands and specimens from the MG herbarium. Morphological observations were made using a ZEISS stereomicroscope with a clear camera. The nomenclature adopted to indicate the form and indument of morphological structures was based on the works of LAWRENCE (1973) and RIZINNI (1977). P. spectabilis is a shrub with a cylindrical stem, elliptic leaves, with a scabrous indumentum and a pinkish corolla. P. apressa is an herb with a cylindrical, striated stem, with linear, glabrous, fleshy leaves, greenish corolla. P. variabilis is an herb with a branched stem with striations, small linear leaves, the lower ones are vexillar and deciduous and the upper ones are alternate and glabrous, lilac corolla (CNPq/Museu Goeldi).
