The orchids are one of the families with the largest number of species in the plant kingdom. The great specific diversity and the wide geographic distribution make this family extremely interesting for several kinds of scientific investigation. The Maranhense region was selected for this study because it is an area that has suffered great deforestation and for presenting a scarcity of publications that focus more significantly on its orchid flora. In view of this problematic, the aim was to survey and study the ecology and geographic distribution of the existing species, as well as the cataloging of new species for the region and for science. The botanical material collected is examined under a magnifying glass and identified through comparisons with herborized material, with illustrations and descriptions in specialized literature. In a preliminary study, 102 different species have already been registered, of which 6 are possible new species that are still being studied.
