The Lamiaceae family has a geographical distribution to warm and temperate regions of the planet. Most of its species belong to a group that produces essential oils. Due to their pleasant aroma they are used in the fragrance and food industries (spices). The present work is a contribution to the chemosystematic knowledge of Mentha and Hyptis species, as well as to enrich the inventory of the odoriferous flora of the Amazon. After collection, the essential oils of Mentha rotundifolia L., Mentha sp, Hyptis cana Pohl ex Benth., H. dilatata Benth. and H. velutina Pohl ex Benth. The hydrodistillation technique was used to separate the essential oils from the dried material for 4 hours. Previously the botanical material was dried for 7 days, giving the following yields: 2.0%, 0.4%, 1.7%, 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively. The essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using a silica capillary column, type DB-S, and a temperature program between 60º and 240ºC (gradient of 3ºC/ min). The main volatile constituents identified were linalool (41.9%), linalyl acetate (32.4%), piperitone oxide (43.4%), 1,8-cineol (27.0%), borneol (22.7%), fenchone (31.3%), ▵-3-carene (18%), (E)-caryophyllene (26.7%), and bicyclogermacrene (7.4%). The results obtained, in association with the literature survey carried out, will be presented at the VI Seminar of PIBIC. Support: Banco MundiaI/PPG-7.
