The Asteraceae family consists of about 1100 genera and around 25000 species and is well represented in the Amazon region. Aiming to contribute to the knowledge of the chemical composition of its essential oils, the following species were studied: Baccharis tridentata Vahl, Cosmos caudatu Kunth, Eupatorium amigdalinum Lam, Eupatorium candoleanum Hooker, Eupatorium conyzoides Mill., Eupatorium cf. klenoides H.B.K., Mikania lindleyana DC., Pectis elongata Kunth, Porophylum ruderalle (Jacq.) Casso and Viguiera nervosa Gardner. The oils were obtained from the dried material by hydrodistillation, and the chemical composition by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, in a FINNIGAN INCOS-XL system, using a DB-5MS silica capillary column, helium as carrier gas and a temperature program of 60°C-240°C (3°C/min). The main components identified in the oil from Baccharis tridentata were: benzaldehyde (22.9%), b-caryophyllene (13.5%), germacrene D (23.1%) and benzyl benzoate (16.1%); from Cosmos caudatus: caryophyllene oxide (27.2%); from Eupatorium amigdalinum: b-caryophyllene (12.3%), germacrene D (15.5%) and caryophyllene oxide (17.4%); from Eupatorium candoleanum: b-selinene (11.2%) and spatulenol (13.8%), from Eupatorium conyzoides: germacrene D (16.8%); from Eupatorium cf. klenoides: germacrene D (10.4%) and caryophyllene oxide (30.1%); from Mikania lindleyana: b-caryophyllene (64.1%) and cedr-8(15)-en-9a-ol (17.9%); from Pectis elongata: perylaldehyde (55.2%); from Porophylum ruderalle: spatulenol (10.1%) and from Viguiera nervosa: a-pinene (32.2%), b-pinene (21.8%), bicyclogermacrene (17.6%) and spatulenol (10.3%). In the essential oils of the studied species, a predominance of sesquiterpenes was observed as main components, mainly b-caryophyllene (12.5%-64.1%), caryophyllene oxide (17.4%-30.1 %) and germacrene D (10.4%-23.1 %).
