The anthropic activities have been providing transformations in the environment in a disorganized way, which have been observed in its most varied forms, either by changes in the quality of air, water and/or soil. In Belém, the inadequate disposal of urban waste gave rise to the studies for the AQUALIVIT A project. The objectives of this sub-project are: a) to study the anthropic influence on the water quality of the water bodies near the sanitary landfill of Aurá; b) to observe the level of pollution in the Guamá River, where it meets the Aurá River; c) to select the main parameters to evaluate the quality of the water of the studied rivers and streams and d) to classify the studied water bodies according to the resolution nº 20 of CONAMA and the decree nº 79.367 of the Ministry of Health. The concern with this study area is precisely the proximity of the Guamá, Aurá, Jaruca and Santana rivers to the Aurá sanitary landfill, which dumps the leachate produced by the decomposition of garbage into these water bodies. This study started in 1997, with the following parameters: pH, electrical conductivity, temperature, chloride, acidity, aIcalinity, turbidity, hardness, sulfate, total solids, phosphate, total solids, nitrite, nitrate, and total iron. In January 1999, the first annual campaign was conducted, and this was the fifth campaign since the beginning of the studies. Changes were observed in the values of certain parameters compared to the previous phases of the study. The electrical conductivity values, for example, are around 80 ɥS/cm in the current campaign and 40 ɥS/cm in previous campaigns at equivalent periods. However, several factors must be observed in order to consider that there has been a relevant change in the characteristics of the water bodies since the beginning of the studies. The results obtained are in the interpretation phase, when they will be framed according to the proposed objectives. This work intends, in some way, to collaborate with public health, targeting not only the riverside dwellers of this area, but all those who use these bodies of water for navigation, recreation, and especially as water supply sources. The study will continue until July of this year, when it must be completed. The study will continue until July of this year, when the results obtained will be presented.
