The site PA-JO-23: Ilha da Ponta, was one of the sites excavated then and showed contemporaneity between the Mangueiras and Marajoara phases. Since complete data about the ceramic material from this site was never published, our work consisted in the analysis of this pottery and the evaluation of the results provided by the type-variety classification method used at the time. The material used in this research consisted of field reports, published articles, and the ceramic fragments that were analyzed and classified in the laboratory. The analysis showed that the ceramic types related to the Mangueiras and Marajoara phases were present in this site, which implies the questioning of the previous model regarding the diachronic succession of the rainforest phases, since, according to Meggers & Danon (1988) these two phases should have been separated by about a thousand years. The identification, also, of fragments that could be classified as belonging to other phases, shows the fragility of the typology built on characteristics linked to the coloration of the core of the fragments. The predominant existence of brushed decoration on fragments that show marked differences in the core shows that other variables must be taken into consideration in determining cultural differences. Entre os anos de 1962 e 1965, foram realizados pela Área de Arqueologia do Museu Goeldi, levantamentos arqueológicos no sudeste da Ilha de Marajó, ampliando para esta região o conhecimento que se tinha para a ocupação humana pré-histórica da Ilha. O sítio PA-JO-23: Ilha da Ponta, foi um dos sítios escavados então e que mostrava contemporaneidade entre as fases Mangueiras e Marajoara. Uma vez que os dados completos sobre o material cerâmico proveniente desse sítio nunca foram publicados, nosso trabalho consistiu na análise dessa cerâmica e na avaliação dos resultados que proporcionam o método de classificação em tipo-variedade, utilizado na época. O material utilizado nessa pesquisa constituiu-se de relatórios de campo, artigos publicados, e os fragmentos cerâmicos que foram analisados e classificados em laboratório. A análise demonstrou que estavam presentes nesse sítio os tipos cerâmicos relacionados com as fases Mangueiras e Marajoara, o que implica no questionamento ao modelo anterior, no que diz respeito à sucessão diacrônica das fases da floresta tropical, uma vez que, segundo Meggers & Danon (1988) essas duas fases deveriam estar separadas por cerca de mil anos. A identificação, ainda, de fragmentos que poderiam ser classificados como pertencentes a outras fases, mostra a fragilidade da tipologia construída sobre características ligadas à coloração do núcleo dos fragmentos.
