These scientific collections are sources of data that can subsidize various lines of research developed in the Amazon. This data is still not very accessible. Based on the need to know how many plant species occur in the region, the project "Determination of the number of Amazonian plant species" was elaborated to carry out a survey in the regional herbariums. The present summary deals with the survey of the IAN herbarium collection. The list of species deposited in the INPA herbarium was used as the basis for this work. Since part of the IAN herbarium collection is computerized in BRAHMS (Botanical Research And Herbarium Management System), we started the work by searching the system for information by family. Then, only the species that occur in the Amazon were selected. This information was exported to Excel and a list of species from the IAN herbarium was prepared and compared to the INPA list. In case the species was not on the INPA list, it was inserted. To date, 48 families have been listed, with 4,830 species, of which the most representative in number of species were: Leguminosae (803), Rubiaceae (491), Melastomataceae (317), Euphorbiaceae (221), Apocynaceae (214), Bignoniaceae (188) and Moraceae (173). Comparing the collections of the MG, IAN and INPA herbaria with respect to Leguminosae, Melastomataceae, Apocynaceae and Moraceae, it was observed that in the MG, the quantity of species is higher in relation to the others, certainly because it is the oldest in the region. Nos herbários da Amazônia está depositada uma valiosa documentação sobre a diversidade vegetal da Região, com cerca de 700 mil amostras de material botânico. Essas coleções científicas constituem fontes de dados que podem subsidiar diversas linhas de pesquisa desenvolvidas na Amazônia. Esses dados encontram-se ainda pouco acessíveis. Baseando-se na necessidade de se saber quantas espécies vegetais ocorrem na Região, foi elaborado o projeto "Determinação do número de espécies vegetais da Amazônia", para proceder o levantamento nos herbários regionais. O presente resumo trata do levantamento do acervo do herbário IAN. Para realização desse trabalho, utilizou-se como base a lista das espécies depositadas no herbário do INPA. Como parte do acervo do herbário IAN encontra-se informatizada no sistema BRAHMS (Botanical Research And Herbarium Management System), iniciou-se o trabalho buscando no referido sistema as informações por família. A seguir, foram selecionadas apenas as espécies que ocorriam na Amazônia. Essas informações foram exportadas para o Excel, preparando-se a lista das espécies do herbário IAN, que foi comparada com a lista do INPA. No caso da espécie não constar na lista do INPA, a mesma foi inserida. Até o momento listou-se 48 famílias, com 4.830 espécies, sendo que as mais representativas em número de espécies foram: Leguminosae (803), Rubiaceae (491), Melastomataceae (317), Euphorbiaceae (221), Apocynaceae (214), Bignoniaceae (188) e Moraceae (173).
