The Amazon biome is one of the most diverse in fauna and flora on the planet. However, knowledge about diversity is still incipient in some parts of this region. This is the case in the northern part of the State of Pará. This study aims to investigate the diversity and geographic distribution of mammals in northern Pará in order to compile the available knowledge on the composition of this fauna. This survey should result in the establishment of a body of data capable of assisting conservation strategies. Data on diversity and geographic distribution are being obtained from surveys in the literature, and also from the mammal collections of the Museu Paraense Emílio (MPEG), Museu Nacional, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (MNRJ) and Museum of Zoology, University of São Paulo (MZUSP). A preliminary list indicated that 39 species have their distributions coincident with the study area. This number takes into account only non-flying mammals of the orders Didelphimorphia, Xenarthra, Primates, Carnivora, Artiodactyla and Rodentia. So far, these 39 species have had their presence confirmed through empirical records. However, the continuity of the survey should result in an increase in the list of species present in the region |
