This paper presents a diagnosis of current situation of solid waste in the municipality of Abaetetuba (PA), from collection to final destination and proposed as an alternative to a better utilization of waste implementation of selective collection of garbage by the municipal government in partnership with the Cooperative Mixed Recyclable Material Collectors Abaetetuba (COOMCLIMA). The implementation of selective collection is presented as a tool of fundamental importance not only to reduce the amount of recyclable waste thrown into landfill in the city, helping to increase the useful life, but also for generating employment and income for those who survive by scavenging recyclable waste, promoting social inclusion. The methodology consisted basically of literature and field research, based on interviews and observations. The interviews were conducted with the representative of the Municipal Environment Abaetetuba (SEEDS), with the company manager KSGuanais responsible for the collection, transportation and disposal of garbage in the city of Abaetetuba, with the president of COMCLIMA and scavengers of the cooperative. To obtain the desired information on the socioeconomic reality of scavengers applied questionnaires to a sample of 8 pickers because even though the cooperative has only 25 registered cooperative 8 cooperative members are really working in the cooperative, which represents 32% of the universe of registered scavengers . The research showed that the cooperative is facing socioeconomic difficulties and is seeking partnerships to ensure its full operation and strengthening. The conclusion points to the need for a Plan Solid Waste Management policy that prioritizes the 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle), which is one of the basic principles of environmental education, and that allows the inclusion of scavengers as key actors for managing these wastes.
