It has as main objective to attain a discussion of enhancement about methodology of representation of contente of documents in the university scope from the sociocognitive context of catalogers. It has the following specific objectives: a) To study in the literature on the sociocognitive context of the cataloger in the subject cataloging; subject analysis and the normalization study for subject representation. b) Investigate the structure of the Guidelines of subject analysis from the application of the Individual Verbal Protocol with six catalogers from UFPA. c) Collaborate in the discussion to validate the subject analysis Guidelines as an instrument capable of providing standardization in the subject analysis in university libraries. From the methodological point of view, this study fits as a theoretical-practical research, with qualitative descriptive approach. It was used used an Individual Verbal Protocol (PVI), with six catalogers in six university libraries, for reading and discussion of a text. The product of the technique addressed in this research generated categories for analysis, enabling an investigation from the mental processes of professionals in relation to the process of subject analysis in the cataloging of subject in university context. It was possible to discuss, from the transcripts of the PVI, the strengths and weaknesses of the guidelines of subject analysis, evidencing that some attitudes can be negatively reflected at the time of information retrieval. In view of the advances obtained in this research, it was observed that there is a great need to hone normative methodologies for the subject analysis, due to two reasons: the difficulties from process of the subject analysis in the subject cataloging observed in studies developed in the area and also by results of a lack methodological in the área Apresenta um estudo das dificuldades de aprimoramento e estratégias de aperfeiçoamento para a análise de assunto, além de investigar as estratégias desenvolvidas pelos profissionais no processo de análise de assunto na tentativa de aprimorar uma metodologia para a catalogação de assuntos. Possui como objetivo geral alcançar discussão de aprimoramento sobre metodologia de representação de conteúdo de documentos no âmbito universitário a partir do contexto sociocognitivo dos catalogadores. E possui os seguintes objetivos específicos: a) Estudar na literatura sobre o contexto sociocognitivo do catalogador na catalogação de assunto; análise de assunto e o estudo de normalização para representação de assunto. b) Investigar a estrutura das diretrizes de Análise de assunto a partir da aplicação Protocolo Verbal Individual com seis catalogadores da UFPA. c) Colaborar na discussão para validação das Diretrizes de Análise de Assunto como um instrumento capaz de fornecer uma padronização na análise de assunto nas bibliotecas universitárias. Do ponto de vista metodológico, este estudo enquadra-se como pesquisa de caráter teórico-prático, com abordagem qualitativa descritiva. Utilizou-se a técnica do Protocolo Verbal Individual (PVI) com seis catalogadores em seis bibliotecas universitárias, para a leitura e discussão de um texto. O produto da técnica abordada nesta pesquisa gerou categorias para análise, possibilitando uma investigação a partir dos processos mentais dos profissionais em relação ao processo de análise de assunto na catalogação de assunto em contexto universitário. Foi possível discutir, a partir das transcrições do PVI os pontos fortes e fracos da diretriz de análise de assunto, evidenciando que algumas atitudes podem refletir negativamente na hora da recuperação da informação.
