The research is characterized as descriptive, and was performed through a bibliographical and documentary survey, in addition to field research. The conduct of the information centers was evaluated in relation to the preservation of documentary collections and access to information in favor of the construction of collective memory, highlighting the role of the information professional in this process. The paper introduces some considerations about the studied subject, presents a small history of the city of Barcarena, and describes its main bibliographical and documentary collections. It concludes that documents, regardless of their nature, are essential factors for historiographical constructions, since they register aspects of a certain time and space, and, therefore, are preservers of group memory. Analisa a preservação do Patrimônio Documental no município de Barcarena, e seu impacto na construção da memória coletiva local. A pesquisa caracteriza-se como descritiva, e foi realizada por meio de levantamento bibliográfico e documental, além de pesquisa de campo. Avaliou-se a conduta dos centros de informação em relação a preservação de acervos documentais e acesso a informação em favor da construção da memória coletiva, destacando o papel do profissional da informação neste processo. O trabalho introduz algumas considerações sobre o tema estudado, apresenta um pequeno histórico da cidade de Barcarena, e descreve seus principais acervos bibliográficos e documentais.
