The corpus consists of photographs used for teaching / learning in textbooks and also as a way of understanding the past. The analyzed images are of dictatorial events in Brazil that, even with censorship and repression, were not prevented from photographing, as a form of learning for the future. The methodology used in this study is of the GDV within the representational, interactional and compositional functions proposed by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006), considered essential for the analysis of multimodal texts. As a result, a greater understanding of the student, from the visual use, to analyze the contributions of these photographs for the reconstruction of the facts narrated about the military dictatorship in the context of the textbook. O seguinte trabalho tem como título A gramática do design visual: uma proposta de leitura de fotografia documental, tendo sua pesquisa voltada para a teoria da Gramática do Design Visual, de Kress e Van Leeuwen (2006), com objetivo de analisar a multimodalidade presente nas fotografias documentais, desvendando os significados nesse gênero, como uso de fotografias do contexto do regime militar brasileiro desnudando discursos materializados no contexto não verbal sobre acontecimentos da época. O corpus é formado por fotografias usadas para o ensino/aprendizagem em livros didáticos e também como forma de entender o passado. As imagens analisadas são de eventos ditatoriais no Brasil que, mesmo com a censura e repressão, não foram impedidos de fotografar, como uma forma de aprendizado para o futuro. A metodologia empregada neste estudo é da GDV dentro das funções representacional e interacional, propostas por Kress e Van Leeuwen (2006), tidas como essencial para analise de textos multimodais.
