This experiment consists of two plots of 1 hectare each, and a control (A) and one of exclusion (B), which are carried out simultaneous measurements since the beginning of 2001. It was used in this study of mortality data for both vegetable plots, computed from January 2005. The results showed that the mortality rate in the total B share was 63.7% higher than in the plot, this fact justified primarily by the death of large trees. This behavior is linked directly with the drastic exclusion of rainwater in part B, providing large reduction in the availability of water in the soil, essential for the existence of the forest. Analisar os possíveis efeitos da redução da umidade do solo sobre a taxa de mortalidade vegetal no sítio experimental do projeto ESECAFLOR/LBA (01° 42’ 30’’ S e 51° 31’ 45’’ W), localizado na Floresta Nacional de Caxiuanã, Estação Científica Ferreira Penna, município de Melgaço, Pará. O experimento ESECAFLOR / LBA consiste na exclusão parcial da água da chuva em uma área de 1 hectares, para se estudar as possíveis conseqüência da redução da umidade do solo no ciclo da floresta, algo semelhante ao efeito el nino. Este experimento é constituído por duas parcelas de 1 hectare cada, sendo uma de controle (A) e outra de exclusão (B), onde são realizadas medições simultâneas desde o início do ano de 2001. Foram utilizados neste trabalho dados de mortalidade vegetal para ambas as parcelas, computadas a partir de janeiro de 2005. Os resultados indicaram que a taxa de mortalidade total na parcela B foi 63,7% maior que na parcela A, fato este justificado, principalmente, pela morte de grandes árvores.
