The Antônio Lemos architectural complex was idealized by the intendant Antônio Lemos (1843-1913) with claim to shelter orphaned girls from the Paraense Orphelinato. The construction was made viable by the promulgation of the Law No. 370, from December 28, 1903. Therefore, it was provided a plot of seventy acres in Santa Izabel village to build the orphanage. The work started in mid-1905, but it was paralyzed in 1911 due to political reasons, and returned in 1926, during the government of Antonio Crespo Castro (? -?), because the mobilization of the Mac-Dowell Foundation. Since then, the architectural complex has undergone several institutional changes over the years and currently hosts the State School Antonio Lemos. The referred property is recognized as heritage of the city of Santa Izabel by a portion of the Izabelense community, as a result of the historical relevance of the building and its meaning for the city. It is noteworthy that part of the complex was heritage listed by SECULT/DPHAC in 1982. This work aims to explore and present several potential of the Antônio Lemos architectural complex, taking into account its cultural heritage present in the orality of the Izabelenses citizens and from the people related to the architectural complex. In addition to the analysis of official documents, a data collection, photographic registers and the architectural description of the facade are provided. This work also intends to expose alternatives to improve the idea of thinking about the place as a museum institution, in order to preserve, and divulge the architectural complex and its collection, as historical heritage of the region. |
