Strength Training (TF) has been widely used as a training protocol aimed at improving
the performance of athletes and for maintaining the health of special groups. Intellectual
Disability (ID) is a disease that affects the intellect and not the functioning of the mind in
general. The person with ID has a cognitive impairment, has a delay in their
development, difficulties to interact with the environment in which they live and perform
daily tasks. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the practice of strength
training in people with intellectual disability promotes improvements in health and in
Activities of Daily Living. For this, a bibliographic review was carried out, based on a
survey of works published from 2003 to 2020, in the platforms: Google Academic, Scielo,
Capes Journal Portal and Pub Med. strength for intellectual disability” and “Activity of
daily living”. The results were presented in a table, following the chronological order with
the names of the authors, title of the work, place and year of publication and a brief
summary of the results. It was possible to conclude that strength training presents acute
and chronic physiological responses, promoting significant improvements in the variables
strength, balance, motor coordination, physical fitness, decrease in body fat and increase
in bone mass. Such benefits directly impact the Activities of Daily Living of the DI, as
they guarantee greater autonomy to these individuals when performing daily movements
such as sitting and standing, going up and down and combing their hair. |
