The elderly population present some characteristics which make them a frequent victim of urinary system infection during hospitalization, bringing serious impacts over their health. This study aims to identify the risk factors for urinary system infection in patients above 60 years old hospitalized at João de Barros Barreto University hospital, in the period of 01/01/2000 to 31/01/2008. A formulary with social-demigrafic, clinic and microbiologic itens. Was performed the criteria are the same from CDC of the United States for verification of hospital infection. According to the results of this study there is an important tendency for pations between sixty and sixty-nine years old to develop urinary system infection while hospitalized, specially feminine patients was borning in Belém and those who are at the medical clinic infirmary. The most common principal disease occurred on liver biliary tract and lungs. Among the risk conditions, systemic arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The main period of hospitalization was about 14 days and the majority of the studied patients remained in the hospital over 10 days. The great incidence of urinary system infection was observed in the first 5 days and the most common symptons were: fever, over-pubic pain, disury and polaciury. The most often found etiologic agents in urine cultures were: Escherichia Coli, Klebsiela and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa. Quinolonas were the elected antibiotic to fight that infection.
