We reviewed 135 medical charts, according to a form that included demographic characteristics of preterm infants and maternal, history of delivery and neonatal and immediate assessment of the growth in age and weight of premature babies. The data obtained were analyzed in a database created in Microsoft programs Excel and EPI-INFO 6.04, with application of chi-square and t-Student. It was observed that among mothers of premature infants, 61.2% were aged below 30 years and of these 21.6% were teenagers (15-19 years), 50.9% underwent cesarean section, 46.6% were predigests, 85.3% had carried through pregnancy care but 56% with number of less than six and 45.7% showed the ITU as the disease urinary-gynecologic more frequent during pregnancy, birth, 53.4% of preterms were male , 93.1% weighed between 1001 to 1500, 73.3% were aged 30.1 to 35 weeks, showed high Apgar scores of the first (median 8.0) and in the fifth minute (Median 9.0) showed similar gain and growth (weight, height and head circumference) progressively lower in the three age groups studied. The results this research show that the mothers of premature infants with very low birth weight, were mostly young, predigests, with carried through pregnancy assistance of inadequate form, with urinary tract infection (UTI) the most frequent urinary-gynecologic disease during pregnancy, boys and girls are also seen in the clinic and about half of those born with very low birth weight, moderately premature infants with high Apgar scores for both the first in the fifth minute, with progressively reduced income in anthropometric measurements related to growth (weight, height and head circumference). Probably, these are characteristics of the mother child factors contributing to prematurity and low birth weight gain of premature infants with reduced growth trend. A investigação foi realizada no período de janeiro a dezembro de 2007 com o objetivo de avaliar o crescimento de crianças com prematuridade e peso inferior a 1500g ao nascer, no primeiro ano do Ambulatório do Prematuro da FSCMPA; identificar os possíveis fatores de riscos relacionados à prematuridade e ao muito baixo peso ao nascer e o desempenho do crescimento destas crianças. Foram revisados 135 prontuários, aplicando-se um formulário que abrangia as características demográficas maternas e dos prematuros, antecedentes do parto e neonatal imediato e a avaliação do desempenho do crescimento em grupos etários e ponderais destes prematuros. As informações obtidas foram analisadas em um banco de dados criado nos programas Microsoft Excel e EPI-INFO 6.04, com aplicação dos testes Qui Quadrado e t-Student. Foi observado que entre as mães dos prematuros, 61,2% tinham idade inferior a 30 anos e destas 21,6% eram adolescentes (15-19 anos), 50,9% foram submetidas à cesárea, 46,6% eram primigestas, 85,3% realizaram pré-natal, porém 56% com número de consultas inferior a seis e 45,7% apresentaram a ITU como a doença uroginecológica mais freqüente durante a gestação; ao nascer, 53,4% dos prematuros eram do gênero masculino, 93,1% pesavam entre 1001 a 1500g, 73,3% tinham idade de 30,1 a 35 semanas, apresentaram altos escores de Apgar no primeiro (Mediana de 8,0) e no quinto minuto (Mediana de 9,0) e apresentaram semelhante ganho do crescimento (peso, estatura e perímetro cefálico) progressivamente menor nos três grupos etários estudados. Os resultados obtidos nesta investigação permitem concluir que, as mães dos prematuros com muito baixo peso ao nascer, eram em sua maioria jovens, primigestas, com assistência pré-natal realizada de forma inadequada, com a Infecção do Trato Urinário (ITU) a mais freqüente das doenças uroginecológicas durante a gestação; meninos e meninas são atendidos igualmente no ambulatório e cerca de metade destes nasceram com muito baixo peso, moderadamente prematuros, com altos escores de Apgar, tanto no primeiro quanto no quinto minuto e com rendimento progressivamente reduzido nas medidas antropométricas relacionadas ao crescimento (peso, estatura e perímetro cefálico).
