Resumo:
Agerelated macular degeneration is a degenerative disease that affects the macula of individuals over 60 years old, compromising their central vision. Studies describe the power of carotenoids and antioxidants in preventing and delaying the progression of this disease. OBJECTIVES: To emphasize the importance of nutritional counseling for patients undergoing AMD treatment in the face of several studies that seek to understand the action of nutritional supplements in the treatment of this disease, as well as to discuss the effectiveness of nutritional orientation in changing some risk factors inherent to it. METHODOLOGY: This is a literary review, which analyzed several scientific articles, dated between the years 2000 to 2017, published in English, Spanish and Portuguese and available on online platforms, such as MedLine, Sciello, Brazilian Journal of Ophthalmology and repository of the University of Coimbra. RESULTS: Antioxidants and carotenoids are part of the context of AMD, being introduced in the treatment in order to increase the expectation and quality of life of the patient. Clinical evidence suggests the beneficial action of high doses of antioxidants and carotenoids being able to prevent and minimize the effects of AMD, as well as to act on the risk factors of this disease. CONCLUSIONS: With regard to the use of synthetic vitamin supplements, or even in the nutritional orientation for high doses of carotenoids, vitamins and minerals, more studies are still needed for each population studied. And even with results still so controversial, the role of the nutritionist is immensely relevant for such guidance to be given adequately, always seeking to improve the quality of life of these patients, acting in the change of eating habits that may exert relevance in the care of the patients. risk factors inherent in this disease.
