Marajoara westling (MW) is a genuinely Brazilian and traditional fighting modality from Marajó archipelago in Pará, and it is facing an imminent process of esportivization. This study aims to discuss the main risks of this process for the practice of MW as a symbol of the archipelago popular culture. This is a basic qualitative study and was carried out through a bibliographic research directed to the state of the art on the subject. The main risks pointed out were based on the process of esportivization of other sports that went through a similar process. The results obtained showed that the process of MW esportivization offers risks to this practice as a symbol of popular culture, because factors as: dominance of the performance sport over other elements of culture, valorization of technicism, exclusion of the less fit for competitions and inclusion of techniques from other fight modalities interfere in the way that the MW is experienced by the practitioners. |
