OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to do a formal record of these medical terms. METHODOLOGY: The terms were collected through direct consultation of the medical literature, covering four major medical areas, in addition to two other specialties. RESULTS: In the universe of 865 terms, Internal Medicine corresponded to 35.8% of this total. Clinical Pathology contributed with 26.2%, followed by Pediatrics (22.0%), General Surgery (17.4%), Radiology (10.5%), and Gynecology and Obstetrics, in turn, (7.0%). 667 terms (77.5%) referred only to images while 168 (19.5%) terms referred to the meaning. In addition, only 92 (10.6%) of the terms appear in the international database consulted, while 773 (89.4%) do not exist. CONCLUSION: Medicine, once creating informal terms for its learning and teaching, is also a human science. In these informal and poetic terms, it was seen that the image allusions were the majority. However, there is a need to be a greater appreciation of these expressions at a scientific level, with updates to the DeCS database so more of these terms and expressions can be included. Moreover, it is important that further studies in this rich in possibilities and still underexplored area are made. INTRODUÇÃO: Ao longo do curso de medicina, o estudante se depara com inúmeros termos comparativos, informais e poéticos, sendo o uso das metáforas recorrente em educação médica durante toda a matriz curricular. OBJETIVO: O presente estudo teve como objetivo realizar um registro de tais termos. MÉTODO: Os termos foram coletados mediante consulta direta à literatura médica, sendo contempladas quatro grandes áreas médicas, além de duas outras especialidades. RESULTADOS: No universo de 865 termos, Clínica Médica correspondeu 35,8% deste total. A Patologia Clínica contribuiu com (26,2%), seguida da Pediatria (22,0%), Cirurgia geral (17,4%), Radiologia (10,5%), e a Ginecologia e Obstetrícia, por sua vez, (7,0%). 667 termos (77,5%) faziam alusão apenas a imagens enquanto 168 (19,5%) termos fizeram alusão metafórica de sentido. Além disso, apenas 92 (10,6%) dos termos constam na base de dados internacional consultada, enquanto 773 (89,4%) inexistem na mesma. CONCLUSÃO: A capacidade humana de criar e comparar, além da sensibilidade poética e artística intrínseca ao ser humano, está também presente na Educação Médica. Nestes termos informais e poéticos, as alusões de imagem foram majoritárias. Porém, é necessário que haja uma maior valorização destas expressões a nível científico, com atualizações na base de dados dos DeCS para que haja a inclusão da maioria destes termos e expressões.
