Presents the skills and abilities that a Librarian must have to manage an information unit. Expose that you need a skilled and competent professional to execute tasks with quality. The main objective is to identify the skills and abilities that allow a librarian to develop a good management work, as well as to understand the influence that this issue has on the processes and services provided by the information units, based on the Biblioteca Central da Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA). In order to reach the objective, an exploratory research and an extensive bibliographical survey were carried out, addressing what would be the competencies, abilities and what the librarian manager needs. A questionnaire was applied to the main managers of the Central Library to know the level of training, their professional experiences, what they understood as competences and skills and what they needed to develop a good job, as well as the difficulties found in managing their sectors. In view of the research carried out, it is concluded that it is important to always be updating in their areas of action, always seeking to prioritize the user, which is the reason of being an information unit.
