In Brazil, the management of Urban Solid Waste (MSW) faces numerous challenges, primarily due to the lack of adequate infrastructure for the final disposal of these materials. Within this context, a survey conducted in the state of Pará aims to evaluate the management of MSW over time, analyzing quantitatively and qualitatively the final destination in different integration regions. The main issue is the prevalent use of landfills in many municipalities, which has negative impacts on the environment and public health. The limited availability of information on waste disposal further emphasizes the significance of this study. Despite the increase in data disclosure, there is a need for incentives to ensure that all municipalities fulfill their reporting and transparency obligations. The findings indicate a rise in the utilization of landfills, although there have been variations in the use of controlled landfills over time. However, the overall percentage of waste disposal in landfills remains relatively low, considering the 144 municipalities in the state. While the implementation of the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) has brought about some changes, full compliance with the guidelines continues to encounter challenges. Improving the infrastructure for the appropriate disposal of MSW and promoting sustainable management practices in Pará are crucial objectives that should be pursued.
