The inadequate final disposal of solid waste in open dumps is a reality in traditional communities, especially quilombolas, located in the Northern Region of Brazil. This scenario generates several negative environmental impacts, as well as public health problems. In this wake, the emission of gases into the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide and methane stands out– arising from the biodegradation of these materials – which contribute to the greenhouse effect and climate change, as well as other environmental problems, stands out. To minimize/avoid this problem, social and low-carbon technologies - such as composting - can be adopted for the adequate treatment of organic waste in these locations. Given this, the present study aims to employ community composting as a low-cost technology for treating organic waste. To this end, the research was structured in four stages: convening the community, diagnosis, environmental awareness and education, preparation and construction of the composter, maintenance of the composter as well as evaluation and challenges. The results obtained during the implementation of the composter were satisfactory, as the community
actively participated in the assembly and management of the composter, showing interest and asking pertinent questions. |
