Resumo:
The management of solid waste has become an increasingly important point in the contemporary context. The inefficiency in the management of solid waste has caused social and environmental problems on a large scale, reflecting in the economy. Given the context, the general objective of this work was to analyze a diagnosis about Urban Solid Waste in the municipality of Palmeiras do Tocantins, TO, exposing the final destination of the municipality's waste, including proposing sustainable alternatives for the disposal of solid waste. The design used was exploratory research, in addition to the following methodological procedures: i) bibliographic survey; ii) data collection from public agencies; and iii) fieldwork. Thus, Environmental Education becomes an important instrument of transformation, being fundamental for the development of a critical awareness in relation to the environment, generating commitment and responsibility of the population towards its garbage. The results of the study made it possible to diagnose the issue of solid urban waste in the municipality of Palmeiras do Tocantins, at the same time proposing alternatives, such as composting, which is a method of using organic waste, generally used in small rural properties, which drives small local producers and generates benefits for the whole society. It is concluded that composting, individual and collective actions can bring great benefits to the natural resources of the analyzed territory, allowing a significant reduction in the amount of waste to be discarded daily, thus avoiding contamination of the soil, groundwater and the biome as a all, contributing to the reduction of impacts caused by the current form of final disposal of solid urban waste and raising awareness of selective collection, thus mitigating socio-environmental impacts.
