This work presents the social reality of the 19th century, a time when society was undergoing major advances and transformations. An approach to naturalism will be made, highlighting the main theories that emerged at that time, presenting the relationship between naturalism and science, and how a naturalist novel is characterized, based on the experimental novel, which was responsible for Zola, which was based on the models observation scientists. Next, the relationship between literature and society will be discussed, emphasizing its social importance and its ability to develop the critical being of human beings, as presented by Antônio Cândido, also focusing on the presence of black people in society and their representation in literature. Finally, we will present in the novel O Mulato how racial prejudice is manifested in the writing of the novel, emphasizing the characters, their lines and racist attitudes. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de apresentar o preconceito racial presente no romance O Mulato de Aluísio Azevedo publicado em 1881, evidenciando o protagonista Raimundo, que é o alvo principal do preconceito por conta das suas origens negras. Essa obra apresenta a realidade social do século XIX, momento em que a sociedade passava por grandes avanços e transformações. Será feita uma abordagem sobre o naturalismo, destacando as principais teorias que surgiram nessa época, apresentando a relação entre naturalismo e ciência, e como se caracteriza um romance naturalista, tomando como base o romance experimental, que teve como responsável Zola, que baseasse nos modelos cientificistas de observação. Em seguida será discutida a relação literatura e sociedade, enfatizando sua importância social e sua capacidade de desenvolver o sendo crítico do ser humano, como nos apresenta Antônio Cândido, enfocando também a presença do negro na sociedade e sua representação na literatura.
