OBJECTIVE: To analyze, through an integrative review, through bibliographical research, the impacts of leprosy on the mental health of affected patients. METHODS: This is an integrative review of the literature, carried out in databases: SIELO, MEDLINE and LILACS, using key words, “Leprosy”, “Mental Health”, “Mental Disorders”, “Quality of Life”, “Anxiety” and “Depression.” RESULTS: At the end of crossing the keywords and the entire process of inclusion, exclusion and qualitative evaluation of the materials described in the methodology, a total of 29 articles were evaluated. By reading the articles, it became evident that leprosy and its sequelae affect the mental health of patients by generating changes in the physical aspect firstly and secondly in the social relationships and psychological aspects of patients, these are common changes: emotional fragility, insecurity, hostility, feelings of helplessness, self-depreciation and loss of autonomy. There was a consensus when reading the articles that the vast majority of patients are male, but that female patients are more psychologically affected by the disease. It was also evidenced that leprosy is associated with a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms than in the general population and that a large proportion of these patients are at risk of developing depressive disorders. CONCLUSION: People with leprosy need comprehensive monitoring in the health system, which pays attention to mental health, depressive symptoms and encourages the maintenance of social bonds and professional rehabilitation. INTRODUÇÃO: A hanseníase é uma das doenças mais antigas da humanidade e de impactos ainda relevantes na sociedade, indo para além do âmbito biológico, estando associada a estigmas sociais, sofrimento psíquico e limitação laboral. OBJETIVO: Analisar, por meio de uma revisão integrativa, através de pesquisa bibliográfica, os impactos da hanseníase na saúde mental dos pacientes acometidos. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura, realizada em bases de dados: SIELO, MEDLINE e LILACS, utilizando palavras chaves, “Hanseníase”, “Saúde Mental”, “Transtornos Mentais”, “Qualidade de Vida”, “Ansiedade” e “Depressão”. RESULTADOS: Ao final do cruzamento das palavras chaves e de todo o processo de inclusão, exclusão e avaliação qualitativa dos materiais descrito na metodologia, foram avaliados um total de 29 artigos. Através da leitura dos artigos ficou evidenciado que a hanseníase e suas sequelas afetam a saúde mental dos pacientes por gerar alterações no aspecto físico em primeiro lugar e segundamente nas relações sociais e nos aspectos psicológicos dos pacientes, são alterações comuns: fragilidade emocional insegurança, hostilidade, sentimentos de desamparo, auto depreciação e perda de autonomia. Houve um consenso na leitura dos artigos de que a grande maioria dos pacientes são do sexo masculino, mas que pacientes do sexo feminino são mais afetadas psicologicamente pela doença. Também ficou evidenciado que a hanseníase está associada com uma maior prevalência de sintomas depressivos do que na população em geral e que grande parte desses pacientes está sob o risco de desenvolver transtornos depressivos.
