The libraries of the period of Antiquity and the Middle Ages acted as true deposits of books and few had access to knowledge. The librarians who worked in these libraries had as its goal the dissemination of information, these professionals performed the role of guardians of knowledge. The information units of today make use of the new technological resources in order to promote and facilitate access. The methodology used is the bibliographic research and the overall goal is to expose a comparative analysis about the changes that have occurred in the profile of the librarian and libraries of antiquity to the present day. It is through this research that there was a change of paradigms in the profile of the librarian and the library. Estudo comparativo acerca das bibliotecas do período da Antiguidade até a atualidade. As bibliotecas do período da Antiguidade e da Idade Média funcionavam como verdadeiros depósitos de livros e poucos tinham acesso ao conhecimento. Os bibliotecários que atuavam nessas bibliotecas não tinham como objetivo a disseminação da informação, esses profissionais executavam o papel de guardiões do saber. As unidades de informação da atualidade fazem uso dos novos recursos tecnológicos a fim de promover e facilitar o acesso. A metodologia utilizada é a pesquisa bibliográfica e o objetivo geral é expor uma analise comparativa acerca das mudanças ocorridas no perfil do bibliotecário e das bibliotecas da Antiguidade até a atualidade.
