However, if such waste remains untreated, this leads to pollution of air, water, soil or solid waste. In this context, it is worth mentioning the importance of higher education institutions in society in two fundamental aspects: creating and disseminating knowledge, and being a reference in terms of attitude, training students, both as professionals and as citizens. Therefore, the objective of this study was to ascertain the types of wastes generated by mechanical laboratories and how their actual disposal is done. For the study, a structured questionnaire was used as a data collection tool, with a group of 28 students from the technical course of medium level in Mechanics. It was possible to conclude that in IFAM, in general, there are existing environmental initiatives, which should continue to be adopted for the increasing process of awareness raising and subsequent awareness in all the sectors that comprise it, with the aim of adopting an Environmental Management System. Os resíduos sólidos são materiais originários das diversas atividades humanas, como agricultura, indústria, atividades domésticas etc., podem se encontrar em estado sólido, líquido e gasoso. Contudo, a ausência do tratamento desses resíduos, leva à poluição do ar, da água e do solo. Nesse cenário, convém falar da importância das instituições de ensino na sociedade em dois aspectos fundamentais: criar e difundir o conhecimento e educar, a fim de formarem profissionais e cidadãos conscientes de sua missão socioambiental. Diante disso, o objetivo do presente estudo foi averiguar os tipos de resíduos gerados pelos laboratórios do curso de Mecânica e como é feito seu real descarte. E para sua realização utilizou-se como ferramenta de coleta de dados, um questionário estruturado com uma turma de 28 discentes do curso já mencionado.
