The care of the traumatized animal still represents a challenge for veterinarians at the time of the initial approach and triage. The work was carried out from the selection of articles, documents, websites, and online journals between the years 2008 and 2021, using as criteria of choice, relevance, year of publication, and availability for full access. Primary care consists of assessing airway, breathing and circulation, where the "ABC" of trauma is fundamental. Therefore, rescuers must be trained and updated in protocols, scales and triage systems that, although adapted from human medicine, are efficient and useful in making correct decisions and determining priorities to be established, which will directly influence the prognosis of the animals treated. O trauma pode ser caracterizado por uma força que quando aplicada sobre um corpo causa lesões teciduais múltiplas e é uma das principais causas de óbito de cães e gatos na emergência de pequenos animais. O atendimento ao animal traumatizado ainda representa um desafio para médicos veterinários na hora da abordagem e triagem iniciais. O trabalho foi realizado a partir da seleção de artigos, documentos, sites, revistas online entre os anos de 2008 e 2021 tendo como critérios de escolhas, relevância, ano de publicação e disponibilidade para acesso na íntegra. O atendimento primário consiste na avaliação das vias aéreas, respiração e circulação, onde o ABC” do trauma é fundamental.
