Resumo:
Brazil is among the countries that consume the most medicines, where the ease of purchasing different types of drugs contributes to the culture of self-medication and the practice of "pharmacy" in households, this fact can result in an excessive accumulation of medicines, which it can contribute to their being stored, used and disposed of incorrectly, becoming a serious problem for public health. Thus, it is relevant to carry out studies that identify the population's knowledge about self-medication, storage and correct disposal of medications and the role of the pharmacist in this process. The methodology used was the elaboration of an integrative review, the researches were carried out in the main databases such as Scielo, Pubmed, Lilacs, Science Direct, Virtual Health Library and Capes Journal Portal, complemented by a free search on the Web. showed that the act of incorrectly disposing of medications is a common practice, mainly because users do not have knowledge about the correct performance of this activity. Thus, educational actions are needed in the community, in order to minimize irrational practices of consumption, storage and disposal of medicines, especially for large families and people with chronic diseases.
