The vegetarian diet is defined as a dietary pattern that predominantly uses foods and products of plant origin, completely excluding meats of animal origin, so it can be considered a diet with some important nutritional restrictions, especially in relation to essential amino acids and proteins of high biological value. The support and interest in vegetarianism have increased worldwide, including by athletes, with this has been discussed the influence of this type of diet on the physical performance of these athletes, but it is still a theme surrounded by doubts and controversies and the progress of the discussion on the subject is important, since a balanced diet is indispensable, especially when we talk about sports performance. In addition, it results in the importance of planned and individualized nutritional behaviors that are necessary, always obeying the type, intensity and duration of physical exercise, and must meet the objective of the athlete, which can be from the maintenance or gain of muscle mass, decrease in body fat percentage and fatigue retardation, for example. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a narrative review of the literature and show what the scientific community says about the influence of the vegetarian diet on the physical performance of athletes. Also show the differences and similarities between a vegetarian diet and standard diet. Present the prevalence of consumption of a vegetarian diet among the public of athletes. Point out the impacts of the vegetarian diet on the athlete's body. Bring data that shows the benefits and harms of the vegetarian diet for physical performance. Present nutritional alternatives to avoid possible nutritional deficiencies. |
