It is the right of every human being to have an adequate and healthy diet, guaranteed through Food and Nutritional Security (SAN). Failure to comply with this right may result in individual, family and Community damage. Attention in this context should be paid to university students in order to understand how changes in this period can intervene in the SAN. The aim of this study is to describe the prevalence of food insecurity (InSaN) and its possible associated factors among university students in the interior of Amazonas. Cross-sectional study, conducted at a public university in the municipality of Coari. A representative sample of 175 students from different courses with data collection in three stages was evaluated: sociodemographic information, food consumption indicators and application of the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA), and weight and height measurement was performed. It was observed that 77.1% were in InSaN, and of these, 5.7% in severe InSAN. The same proportion (5.7%) were thin and 40.5% overweight or obese. A negative and significant association was observed (r=-0.15; p=0.044) between the BiaS score and nutritional status. In the multivariate model, sex (girls have more InSAN), nutritional status (higher ANS among individuals with higher classification of nutritional status) and consumption of sausages (lower consumption among those with higher InSan) had statistical significance. It is concluded that most of the students evaluated are in an InSAN situation. There is a need to implement public policies to improve the conditions of SAN for this public.
