Introduction: Aging is a natural and universal process recurring to development, characterized by a physiological decline, which occurs after sexual maturation implying a gradual decrease in the probability of survival of the organism and in the space in which the elderly live all these dimensions of aging. Objective: This study aims to evaluate and characterize the purpose of life, pain and cognition in elderly living in the city of Coari-AM. Methods: Elderly over 60 years domiciled in Coari-AM, who present pain or dissatisfaction. Cognitive function was assessed by the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Informant Questionnaire on the Cognitive Decline in the Elderly (IQCODE), Semantic Verbal Fluency Test (TFV), Figure Recognition Test (TRF) and Trail Test (TT), and depression index by the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), pain was evaluated by the Numerical Pain Scale and Face Scale, and the life purpose by the Global Satisfaction Scale, followed by the Control, Autonomy, Self-Realization Scale. and Pleasure (CAPS19). Results: 50 elderly, mostly women (80%), aged 60 to 69 years. According to MMSE, (70%) of the elderly have severe cognitive decline. By characterizing the depression index (42%) of the elderly presents ≥ 5 depressive symptoms. As for pain, (62%) rated moderate to unbearable pain, however (72%) were satisfied with life. Conclusion: There is a severe cognitive deficit associated with low education, high prevalence of pain, and yet they have a high perspective on life and the preservation of happiness.
