Resumo:
The increase of the elderly population in Brazil has been significant, a phenomenon that also has global prominence. As a result, there is an increasing demand for services aimed at this population, such as the search for institutionalization in long-term care facilities for the elderly. However, this demand is influenced by motivations that require professionals to have prior knowledge of each person's reality, seeking for the best intervention according to each case. In order to understand the social issues that lead to the search for institutionalization of these individuals, this study was conducted based on observations during an internship at the Dr. Thomas Elderly Support Foundation (FDT) in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, focusing on the group of institutionalized individuals between the months January and October 2023. To achieve the general objective, two research modalities were chosen: bibliographic and documentary, as well as qualitative and quantitative approaches that complement each other and contribute to a better understanding of the studied phenomena. Chapter I was based on a literature review that presents an overview of care institutions in the Northern Region and the need for long-term care for the elderly. The second chapter, following the same research modality as the first one, shows perspectives about violations of rights against the elderly. Finally, Chapter III, based on documentary analysis, presents results that highlight the achievement of the general objective by identifying the reasons related to rights violations that led the group of elderly individuals to be institutionalized at FDT. These discussions demonstrate that the existing care facilities are insufficient to supply the demand of individuals suitable for institutionalization, with the expression of these social issues manifested in violations of rights against the elderly.
