AIM: The study aims to investigate anthropometric values and the relationship between the level of physical activity and handgrip strength in long-lived elderly people living in rural areas of Amazonas. METHOD: The present study is characterized as descriptive and observational involving a sample of 95 elderly residents of rural areas. The values for measuring handgrip strength using the dynamometer and the level of physical activity using the pedometer were analyzed. The statistical analysis was processed by the MINI TAB software containing variables, N, mean, standard deviation, minimum, median and maximum. RESULTS: Among the 95 elderly people evaluated, 50 were men and 45 were women, with an average age of 84.48 years. Regarding the level of activity, the general average of steps in the studied sample was 4,790.65 steps/day for the elderly, as for HGS, a general average was observed for both sexes, where on the right side the average was 20, 31 kgf, left side was 18.01 kgf. CONCLUSION: This study shows that physical activity is related to better HGS values, indicating that active elderly people have better body strength than inactive elderly people. It is concluded that there are differences between anthropometric values and measurement of handgrip strength according to the level of physical activity between long-lived men and women. Where men had higher HGS and PAL values compared to women. |
