Studies show that women who receive diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are generally diagnosed later than men. This is due to differential factors in neuropsychological assessment and sociocultural aspects, such as gender stereotypes. This research aimed to understand the impact of gender intersections on the experiences of women who received late diagnoses of ADHD and/or ASD. The research methodology was qualitative. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 4 women who received late diagnoses of ADHD and/or ASD. From the interviews, it is possible to recognize that the delay in receiving a diagnosis is related to generational factors, the social class of these women, and gender aspects, particularly considering the use of masking to adapt to socially prescribed roles for women in a patriarchal society. The conclusion of this work is that there is a need for expanded research on this topic to provide these women with the necessary care and attention. |
