Resumo:
The study addresses the prevalence of physical inactivity among young people from four public schools in Parintins (AM), highlighting its impact on public health. Physical inactivity, especially among young people, is exacerbated by the modern sedentary lifestyle influenced by factors such as technological advancement. The research emphasizes the importance of understanding associated determinants, such as socioeconomic and demographic conditions, to formulate intervention strategies. To analyze the prevalence of insufficient physical activity during leisure time among students and its associations with socioeconomic, demographic, and anthropometric variables. The research was quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional, using data collected in 2023 from four public schools in Parintins. The study involved 264 high school students, selected based on acceptance via assent forms. Anthropometric, socioeconomic, and behavioral data were collected, along with information about levels of physical activity during leisure time. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS and R software, applying logistic regression to determine significant associations between independent variables and the outcome of being physically active during leisure. The data revealed an alarming prevalence of physical inactivity among students, particularly females, who demonstrated the lowest levels of activity in leisure, commuting, and physical education classes. Male students were 3.98 times more likely to be physically active during leisure compared to female students. Another significant finding was the relationship between a higher household asset index and increased likelihood of being physically active. Although more than half of the students used active transportation to school, overall levels of physical activity still fell short of the recommendations by the World Health Organization (WHO). The analysis highlighted gender and socioeconomic inequalities in physical activity practices. Girls face cultural and social barriers, while students from lower-income families are more vulnerable to sedentarism. The inadequacy of effective practices during physical education classes was also identified as a challenge, underscoring the need to rethink schools' roles in promoting health. Comparisons with national and regional data indicate that inactivity levels in Parintins are even more concerning, reinforcing the urgency of local interventions. The physical inactivity of young people in Parintins requires integrated interventions considering regional specificities. Public policies aimed at creating accessible spaces and programs for sports, increasing emphasis on physical education classes, and raising awareness about the benefits of physical activity are essential. The involvement of the community and families is critical in creating an environment that fosters healthy habits. This study contributes significantly to the development of evidencebased strategies, promoting the health and well-being of the region's youth.
