All of the analysis was built on the discourses and narratives of the Foundation's civil servants and indigenous people who sought the services of the foundation, bringing the discussion about the legitimacy of their institutional role and their autonomy in the defense and protection of indigenous peoples as legal subjects. The dissertation seeks to understand the current political context in which the Foundation is inserted, as well as who are the actors and what are the interests put to the Foundation's performance, which represent the key to understanding what some political scientists call "political game”.Discourses about personal experiences and political power of the Foundation´s servants point to issues that go against the objectives of the international treaties signed by Brazil regarding Human Rights, the Federal Constitution of 1988, that is, the rights of indigenous peoples. O intuito do presente trabalho é trazer a reflexão sobre função social da Fundação Nacional do Índio (FUNAI) no contexto atual das políticas públicas que versam sobre questão indígena no Brasil, a partir da análise da atuação da sua Coordenação Regional em Roraima. Toda reflexão foi construída a partir do discursos e narrativas dos servidores da fundação e indígenas que buscaram os serviços da mesma, trazendo à tona a discussão sobre a legitimidade do seu papel institucional e sua autonomia na defesa e proteção dos povos indígenas enquanto sujeitos de direito. A reflexão proposta busca compreender o atual contexto político em que se insere a Fundação, assim como quem são os atores e interesses postos para a atuação da fundação, os quais representam a chave para se entender o que alguns cientistas políticos e já denominam de “jogo político”. Discursos sobre experiências pessoais e jogos de poder políticos e servidores da instituição, apontam questões que vão de encontro aos preceitos dos tratados assinados pelo Brasil no que tange aos Direitos Humanos, à Constituição Federal de 1988, ou seja, aos direitos dos povos indígenas.
