The aim of this study was to describe how ossification occurs in this species and to estimate the age of living individuals using diagnostic imaging methods. Over the years 2011-2012, radiographs and ultrasound exams of the pectoral fins of 72 animals (37 males and 35 females) kept in two research and rehabilitation centers in the state of Amazonas - Brazil, were evaluated for monitoring bone development. It was observed that the species develops slowly without major events, and there is no the sexual dimorphism in the way ossification occurs, although it occurs at different times for each sex. Radiographic methods correctly estimate the age. However, the intervals of estimated ageobtained were too wide. The ultrasound method was flawed. Future longitudinal studies of long duration can be performed to increase the accuracy of the estimates obtained, with smaller chronological windows proposals. O peixe-boi da Amazônia (Trichechus inunguis) é uma espécie, endêmica dos rios da Amazônia e listada como vulnerável no Brasil. Estudos focando aspectos da biologia da espécie, como parâmetros acerca da idade cronológica dos indivíduos, constituem ferramentas importantes para a compreensão da história de vida desses animais. O objetivo do trabalho foi descrever como a ossificação está ocorrendo na espécie e estimar a idade dos indivíduos vivos por meio de métodos de diagnóstico por imagem. Ao longo dos anos de 2011 a 2012, radiografias e exames ultrassonográficos das nadadeiras peitorais de 72 animais (37 machos e 35 fêmeas) mantidos cativos em dois centros de pesquisa e reabilitação no estado do Amazonas, Brasil, foram avaliados para o acompanhamento do desenvolvimento ósseo. Observou-se que a espécie se desenvolve lentamente, sem grandes eventos marcantes, e que não existe dimorfismo sexual no modo como a ossificação acontece, e sim no tempo em que a mesma está ocorrendo. Os métodos radiográficos estimam corretamente a idade. Contudo, as janelas de idade estimada obtidas como resultado apresentam intervalos de tempo muito amplos. As tentativas efetuadas para adaptação de metodologia ultrassonográfica não gerou resultados positivos.
